Another year and more to give thanks for. But every year that portion of "more" is one that so many of us have and so many of us do not. As we share our family table and our family around us, we are defined by the landscapes we inhabit and the laws we have collectively written here. More and more those rules prop up those already in possession of the blessings against those looking for a place at the table. For a land titled on liberty, there are many many laws on the books. And for a land supposedly ladled with justice far too many of those laws are to perpetuate the powers that be. As much as we rally against big government, we have seen the federal system conglomerate power through military, financial, and media empire. And as much as we use the excuse of big government to supposedly help the masses, we end up socializing far too many of the benefits only to the upper classes, corporations, and oligarchs that are the furthest in need of our help.

The last few decades have seen excesses like never before in financial budgets and military escapes without end or reason. The rich Thanksgiving we are supposed to communally share is more than ever in our nation a hogging of resources and protections for the lofty few at the expense of the aspirations of the nation's sons and daughters. Equity in our country has stratified like the oil and the water in Grandma's homemade gravy. Maybe the next generation will pass some back to the other end of the table.
