Venkatesh Rao, in his epic treaties on corporate and sociopathic culture via “The Gervais Principles” applied numerous theorems to investigate and dissect the manipulations and office dynamics that conspire to elevate the clueless and subordinate the losers, all under the watchful eyes of the sociopathic elites.

Though there are a lot of clever manipulations in the theatre of daily social engineering from mass media, to office politics, to government window dressing most boil down to that tried and true maxim; Divide and Conquer. The key to successful divide-and-conquer lies in recognizing and exploiting two features of what Rao calls “Loser groups”. These are losers in the best sense of the word, ones that know that their fate in life is to just get by and thereby not invest themselves pathologically in their jobs. Their main focus in life is on their family, friends, and hobby interests.

The most essential way to manipulate groups, which we see time and time and time again in our society, is to activate and leverage the many active fault-lines among the population. These can involve an endless array of petty disputes and dislikes and most often come down to those tried and true divisions in race, gender, nation, sexual orientation, etc.

There is a never-ending sequence of little skirmishes within sub-groups, where people gain or lose political capital on a short-term basis, but overall these disputes just churn and are squabbles distracting from the larger issues at hand. The example is the now completely hollow distinction between Democrat and Republican via which people are whipped up into a frenzy of partisanship, despite that fact that at bottom each party is beholden to the same corporate masters and elite supervision.

These skirmishes work to keep the groups permanently destabilized and with doubt, fear, suspicion, and mistrust at satisfactorily high levels for the overlords. Throw in imbedded wars, poverty, xenophobia, and roiling health and educational crises and the chaos alternates between simmering and boiling points like clockwork. Fault lines become a permanent fait accompli of discourse and can always be summoned to make sure unification never occurs. Or could we say, the Divided States of America?
